Team Objective

Transform the existing home network into a reliable, documented, and reproducible foundation for the Smartup Hub. Audit the current router and internet connection, establish performance baselines, improve configuration where beneficial, and document the complete network architecture so it becomes part of the Timeline0 laboratory.

Why: The Smartup Hub depends on stable networking. Every service—Forgejo, Matrix, Engelbot, SmartupOS, remote access, and future public services—relies on the local network operating predictably.

Rather than replacing hardware based on assumptions, we first want to understand the existing infrastructure scientifically. By measuring performance, documenting the architecture, and making incremental improvements, we create a reproducible baseline from which future upgrades can be evaluated objectively.

This objective also extends the Timeline0 philosophy to the physical laboratory itself: infrastructure decisions should be evidence-driven, transparent, and documented.

How: The work will be carried out in four phases:

  1. Audit

    • Inventory the router, internet connection, LAN topology, and configuration.
    • Document firmware, networking settings, DHCP, DNS, firewall, Wi-Fi, and port forwarding.
  2. Benchmark

    • Measure latency, bandwidth, packet loss, DNS performance, and local network throughput.
    • Establish a documented baseline before making changes.
  3. Optimize

    • Apply safe improvements where evidence supports them (static IPs, DNS, firewall rules, QoS, port forwarding, etc.).
    • Evaluate each change against the baseline.
  4. Document

    • Produce a complete network architecture diagram.
    • Record all configuration decisions and rationale.
    • Define future upgrade paths (e.g. OpenWrt) only if justified by the measurements.

What: The completed objective delivers:

  • A fully documented home network.
  • Performance benchmarks for the current infrastructure.
  • An optimized router configuration.
  • Reliable networking for the Smartup Hub.
  • A reproducible network architecture that can be rebuilt or migrated.
  • A clear understanding of whether the current router limits future SmartupOS development.
